Mullins V Elliot

Mullins v Elliot

The two leading lights of Irish National hunt racing are Mullins and Elliot. Both champions in their own right as they continue to dominant the major races throughout the season. Elliot’s rise in recent times has led to a possible change of the guard at the top and this season it is set to go down to the wire. So who will land the Irish trainers Championship and what are the key horses for each stable?

At this early stage Mullins is just edging the market as the 8/11 favourite to retain his championship title. You can also bet on horse racing with Paddy Power and support many of his stars. Elliot looked to have sealed the title last season only for Mullins to overhaul him on the penultimate day of the season with his firepower coming to the fore in the major group races with the likes of Douvan.

This season Mullins possibly looks to have less strength in depth than in recent years but will still be expected to head the leader board come the end of Cheltenham in March as well as the Irish trainers title. When you look at his key horses for the season two stand out as being very important for his title aspirations. These being Footpad and Un De Sceaux.

Footpad is quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting horses in training and if progressing over fences further will take all the beating in the Arkle. The final key horse is Un De Sceaux who has been reliable over the years to gather lots of prize money throughout the season with this year looking no different following his reappearance. Both will then most likely be kept for the later season Irish festivals.

Elliot is currently even money to improve upon his runner up spot from last season. It was an incredible year for Elliot as he recorded his 1000th racecourse winner when Moonday Sun landed the spoils at Punchestown in May. His success was further backed up in the fact he matched Mullins record of winners in a season that has stood since 2012/13 of 193. However this was still not enough to overhaul the Champion but expectations will be high this season in the stable.

When you look at Elliot’s ever growing stable of talent there are some key names that stand out that could make the difference to his victory. These are Apples Jade and the exciting Samcro. Apples Jade is so tough and continues to deliver on the biggest stage as was shown again in her recent success in the Christmas hurdle. She will head to Cheltenham to defend her crown in the Mares as one of the bankers of the meeting before mopping up further races back home. She is so consistent and is a huge asset to the Elliot team. What makes it more fitting is she used to be trained by Mullins before the owner transferred his horses from the Mullins yard.

Samcro looks to be destined for the top with the ease he has been beating fairly high class fields. He is likely to head for the Ballymore at Cheltenham before leading the team for the later Irish festivals.
